Like the previous titles based on the Spider-Man movies, USM unfolds in an open-ended, mission-based fashion-some tasks will advance the plot, while others simply allow you to zip around New York City spreading do-goodery.

Of course, it's still a console game, so expect dodgy camera angles and even dodgier controls, but with aĭecent PC joypad this becomes well worth a spin for Spidey fans.
Complete enough tasks and you unlock the next episode of the story, which is told through clever XIII-style comic-book narrative. The gameplay mainly involves swinging through busy streets (which is great fun, superbly animated and just looks cool), locating various tasks such as races and rescues, and doing everything a spider can. Surprisingly, it's not bad - far better than the pathetic PC version of Spider-Man 2.
Such a confusing circle of references leads us to this, a cel-shaded, comicbook styled, free-roaming romp around Manhattan as the lycra-laden arachnid. So here's the game of the new comic-book series, which is loosely based on the movie, which in turn is a bastardisation of the original comicbook series. It's more likely that the marketing types just thought the word sounded cool, ignoring trivial things like etymology and definitions. The 'Amazing', 'Essential' and 'Spectacular' prefixes all filled their roles as meaningless pieces of superlative, but surely naming its next franchise 'Ultimate Spider-Man' implies that this is the final and terminal retelling of the web-slinging hero's story.

Marvel pulled out a bit of a doozy when fishing around in its magic hat full of market-friendly buzzwords, to stick in front of its latest Spider-Man series.

It took the open world gameplay of Spider-Man 2 and made it better in pretty much every regard, but because it did not have a massive movie to tie into, it did not get the same kind of attention. Those who have played this game love it and know how good it is and I would wager many others feel the same way as me. Ok, hot take here people, but I legit think that Ultimate Spider-Man is a better game than Spider-Man 2. The side content in this game is way more interesting and fun than it was in Spider-Man 2 that is for sure. The core gameplay is very, very similar to what Spider-man 2 offers, but I feel that it is much more refined here and that you have more attacks, moves, and things to do. They can be fun distractions and once you beat Ultimate Spider-Man, you are free to switch between Spidey and Venom on the fly. These range from races, clearing out enemies, fetch quests, and more. This is a pretty massive game, both Spider-Man and Venom have tons of story missions that they can do, but there are also a vast amount of side missions as well. It also has some great voice acting too, although hearing Spidey yell “I own you” was a bit much for my taste. Manhattan and Queens have been recreated very well and the game just has a ton of personality to the way it looks. It really gives the game that comic book style to it and you do feel like you are playing through an interactive comic book which is a lot of fun. During this time many developers were using cell shaded graphics and I think that this is one of the best to do it. Ultimate Spider-Man is a great looking game. As you would expect, Venom and Spider-Man have their own attacks and style of play too which is fun. It is all very cinematic and something that I enjoyed a great deal. Venom is trying to avoid being captured, there are many different story paths and the way the two stories connect is very cool stuff. Spidey is investigating Trask industries to find out more about Venom. The story takes place after the Venom arc and each character has their own story to play through.
One of the big selling points of Ultimate Spider-Man was that it let you play the game as both Spider-Man and Venom. The main versions that I am familiar with are the Game Cube (which I am basing this review on) and the Nintendo DS version too. It was based on the relaunch of the character by Marvel and it features some amazing cell shaded graphics, fast gameplay, and some interesting new designs for classic Spidey characters. It is a bit of an underrated game and one that I think is far better than people realize. Ultimate Spider-Man is a 2005 video game that was released on pretty much anything that could play a video game back in the day.
